Celebrations, October 17, 2014 - of Sheep, knitters and heaven...

Welcome to our Celebration of the Small Things, a blog hop started by Viklit (address below) to pause to appreciate the small things that make us smile.  It doesn't have to be something big, which is why she chose the name.  Whatever makes you smile, whatever has happened that you like to savor or share.  If you want to join, the details are at the bottom of tis page.

I'm celebrating a bit of anticipation:  I am attending the New York State Sheep and Wool Festival (click for the site), held in the pretty town of Rhinebeck NY.  I knit from time to time, have lots of friends who knit, crochet, weave, spin, raise sheep, shear sheep, always have knitting needles stuck behind their ears, and generally act like crazy people having a lot of fun.

I enjoy strolling and watching the  people, and fingering yarn and dreaming of maybe taking some time from editing and polishing The Orphan's Tale, Book II to take that gorgeous tone-on-tone RED yarn and actually KNIT something...  Sigh.  There's a fairway with hot dogs and fries...  And I don't have to drive there for the first time in years.

I've so enjoyed this hop, I decided to post a little photographic interpretation of a favorite quote.  I wish the photos were actually mine, but I hope they make you smile.

Have a wonderful weekend!

You gotta dance like there's nobody looking...

Love like you'll never be hurt...

Sing like there's nobody listening

Live like it's heaven on earth

  1. Diana, I love to crochet. I once stayed at a bed & breakfast where the woman hand spun her own wool. Was awesome. Love your picture quotes, I might have to steal some!!!

    1. Hi, Cathrina -Steal away! The shower photo has me laughing! One of my friends, who will be there, spins her own yarn out of silk, cotton, wool, cashmere... Makes my hands hurt to watch her, but she does beautiful work. I love crochet, too!

  2. I love that saying. My daughter has it on her wall :) The convention sounds like tons of fun. I caught myself fingering tons of cloth at a quilt store the other day. If only there were more hours in the day!

    1. I have quilter friends who took me once to a quilt store on the shore of a lake in New Hampshire. The fabrics were dizzying - all the colors, patterns, from tiny to large and so utterly creative - I wandered around with a number of bolts in my cart until I came to myself and thought 'What on EARTH can I do with these, and in what hours to spare?' I put them back...though I did get a half yard of some lovely cloth that showed a winter scene with snow-swaddled cottages by a lake. It's in my closet. Sigh.

  3. I wish I could knit or crochet with some degree of skill. My stitches always look uneven and I choke that crochet needle like I'm fighting a vampire.

    1. Hey, at least you can draw and paint! And come out with something decorative and enjoyable!

  4. Hand crafted items are always the best, just like from scratch meals. How great to get together with people who love and know their wool!

I'm off to do some dancing.

  5. Awesome! I don't knit or crochet, but my mom loves it. I guess I'm too busy at the piano or computer. (Gotta keep those fingers busy.)

I was in the grocery store the other day, and there was a guy there who kept singing--just out in the open--because he seemed to enjoy it. It was so refreshing! I found myself thinking, why aren't we all like that?

  7. Hi Diana .. it'd be a mistake if someone watched me dance!! But I do love watching others having fun .. especially the littlies. Enjoy the Fair ... wish I could wear wool - but again the colours and weaves are amazing ... and I love seeing sheep in the fields ...

    Cheers Hilary

  9. What fun! Hope you had a wonderful time. I love to look at yarn and fabrics and to feel the texture and smell the wool and dyes. I've never learned to knit, but have great admiration for those who do. And that deep red color is a favorite of mine too.
