Celebrating the Small Things, September 5, 3012

Another Friday morning, kicking back and thinking of the note-worthy (but small) things that we can celebrate.

Cooler weather means that I can break out my fluffy blue bathrobe.  There is much to celebrate in this:

This means the weather is cooler.  Since my idea of a bad time is hot weather, the celebratory nature of this deduction (writing like a Jane Austen heroine) should be obvious.

My cats now can lie on the fluffy thing, knead it, purr over it, and squabble over who gets to lie right smack in the center of the thing.  This makes me laugh, which is always good.

I jotted some chapters, having snuck (sneaked?  the past tense of 'to sneak' is not, I know, 'to snack'...) time from a rather boring passage at work.  Light shed on the flow of the story, an engaging exchange between two brothers...

And I have, finally, found a rather nice Chinese restaurant near my place of employment.  Eight minutes away by car.  I love Chinese food, my family spent several generations in China and Japan (my grandfather is buried in Yokohama, and my great-grandparents spent half WWII interned in a Japanese concentration camp.  We have my grandfather's journal.  But I digress).  The problem is that I moved to an area of the United States, to the capital of a New England state that is notable for its lack of decent restaurants.  All they seem to understand are hot dogs, faux Italian and MSG.

But this place is charming.  They know me by name after three visits.  Their food, though Cantonese (I prefer Northern Chinese) is delicious.  Some Cantonese is sweet, and this is so, but the ingredients are very good, the food is well prepared, the people are delightful, and I am happy.  Hm.  Maybe some garlic shrimp at lunch?  It will have the added benefit of keeping the vampires away...

What are YOU celebrating today?  Join us!

  1. That's fascinating about your past generations, your grandfather and great-grandparents, so big yay for that Chinese restaurant! My husband is half-Chinese so my kids are all mixed up (I'm Spanish and Indian) and have the Chinese blood... but they don't so much enjoy the food o_0.. more for us though lol

Break out the fluffy blue bathrobe and snack! oh wait, I'll snack you sneak and write some more :P

    1. Just you wait! They WILL discover the food, and then you won't have as much to yourself. That is truly sad... ;) The owner greeted me by name last night, handed over the bag of food - and tucked in extra egg rolls. Very charming (and I bet your children are beautiful.)

  2. Hi Diana! Thanks so much for finding me through IWSG!

I'm also celebrating the small things today and share your love of fall and cooler weather. It was 59 degrees this morning when I took my daog for our morning walk and I'm ecstatic about it. While I don't have a fluffy blue bathrobe I do have a bunch of fluffy, comfy cardigans that I burrow in throughout the cooler months and I am SO looking forward to breaking them out again.

    1. Thanks for stopping by. The cardigans sound wonderful! I do love cooler weather. I even like the scent of mothballs (though I have a bag of lavender blossoms I will use when I put my woolens away in the spring...)

  3. Hi Diana .. I have to say .. 30 degrees C we've had recently maybe too hot for us Brits .. but I'd rather that than freeze .. so we see what the winter holds ... it is cooler now and we had a little rain today ...

I don't do wool .. so I do suffer come ice and snow weather ..

Enjoy that Chinese food though .. while the family history is/must be very interesting .. cheers Hilary

    1. I hope, Hilary, you are keeping your entries to your blog somewhere that they can be retrieved and (perhaps?) printed up to be enjoyed. (Your comment about history generated that reflection...) You do have a gift!

  4. Hi Diana, Nice to meet you through the blog hop. You and I couldn't be more opposite when it comes to weather. I like it hot. I am down under and we are heading to summer, so in that regard we can both celebrate the coming season.

    1. A dry heat is not bad. Damp, clammy, unrelenting is an issue for me. I get hives... I've been enjoying your blog - and I threaten my family (when they get uppity) with hamburgers topped with beetroot and a fried egg... (Enjoy your summer! By my calculation you are pushing into spring with that nice stretch ahead of you!)

  5. Hearing about your Chinese food has made me hungry, so thanks for that ;)

Enjoy your robe, and the weather that goes along with it. It's still miserably hot here. I'm so ready for fall!

    1. Hi, Lara -
Ah, but you're in Texas, a state I love, heat and all. The barbecue, the people (that I've encountered) all are just great. One day I'll head down to look at the bluebonnets along (if I recall correctly) Rte 16. Only seen photos...

  6. Sounds like loads of fun celebrations. Past tense 'to snack' - you made me giggle ;)

  7. Boy, you've been doing a lot of blog-festing, haven't you?

Listen, I sure hope you're thinking about writing a book based on your grandfather's journal. I mean, WOW!

Just 2 of them: this and the Insecure Writers. First I have to transcribe that monster - but it's happening! (When I meet him face to face in the next world, I'll ask why on earth he deleted his electronic file!)

    Keep smiling!
