Celebrating Small Things

I'm celebrating the small things - the little victories, the moments that make you catch your breath, smile and move on. I remember an advertisement for something - I forget what it was (canned beans? frankfurters? does it matter?) that included a song that went:

Simple pleasures are the best -
All the little things that make you smile and crow!
All the things you know...
Life's simple pleasures are the best...
Are the best in all the world.
Simple pleasures are the best.

This is a blog hop - weekly for now - suggested by VikLit (you'll like her blog!) as a way to commemorate our little victories week to week.

This week I'm celebrating finally getting on a schedule of regularly scooping my cats' litterboxes.

(Please accept my apologies for making you spit coffee over your screens.  I assure you it was not intentional.)   But you see, scooping cat litter is my idea of the sort of thing you are forced to do in the Gulag.   I always feel like Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, weeping copious tears into his beard - I don't have one, so must make do with my bathrobe - as he maneuvers the slotted scoop under the clumps, grimacing at the smell and wailing in dismay as his hand shakes and he drops a load of damp crumblies all over his bare toes.  Why his toes are bare at the Gulag is beyond me, but mine are bare when I scoop litter, so I will extend the comparison.

But this week - finally - I said 'If it's worth doing it's worth doing well!', rolled up my sleeves, assembled a large plastic bucket, lined it with trash bags and started scooping.  I'm not sure my cats believe I'm really doing it on a regular basis.  One - the big, old fellow, black with white whiskers - went tearing out of the room, bug-eyed.

THAT is my small thing to celebrate.  Where's the caviar?  (Did they offer that in the Gulag?  No - probably vodka and pickles.  Nasty ones.)

As I said, this is a blog hop - go visit these other fun blogs - and it might be safe to sip your coffee now...

  1. A great read, after Monday's blogfest I didn't have time to take part in this one.
Really enjoyed your post and as I said a great read.

  3. Good for you. The smell is one of the main reasons I don't like cats. I think your achievement is a big thing to accomplish.

  4. That's hilarious! I'm so thankful that my cat likes being indoor and outdoor, and prefers going outdoors for everything smelly.

  8. Congratulations Diana. Might I recommend a pair or mules for the task? One might deign to do such tasks but one should never scrimp on footwear. (Sorry, I've been channeling Cousin Violet ala Downton since last week...)
U R High-larious. Mark of a good writer to take litter and turn it into lemonade.

  9. Hahaha...I could just picture you, with that detailed and fun description you wrote! Sounds like me with the dog messes out back...I get them done, but oh how I hate doing that chore around here!

  10. No worries! Cleaning boxes, kitchens, laundry are all a drag that, for some reason, needs so much upkeep! Why can't they just stay clean?

  11. This is not only something for you to celebrate, but I bet when you're not looking, your cats will be doing the happy dance and clapping each other on the back. "Can ya believe it? It's clean! Now we can mess it up again!" Yay! :-)

  12. HAHA this was so entertaining to read but, as a fellow cat owner, so very true. I hated the litter box and usually avoided it until I had to go down to do laundry and felt bad at how much was in there. HINT: I bought a rolling cat litter box and it works WONDERS. You just roll it and all the bad stuff falls into this little tray that you pull out and your done! Best purchase EVER. Now cleaning the litter box is part of my routine but it's not as messy! (PS It is called Omega Paw Roll n Clean)

  13. I can totally relate to this! I _hate_ scooping the litter box, and I _hate_ how both of my cats have what I call the 'poop reserve,' whereby they must make a deposit right after I clean out the box. Grr...

  14. As you say, if you're going to do it, you may as well do a good job.
Here's celebrating the best Cat Litter Scooper or is it Cat Litter Scooptress LOL
